Educational and Fun Activities for1-Year-Olds

If you are looking for educational and fun activities for a 1-year-old, you may be surprised to find out how easy it is to have fun while teaching your child, too. At this age, children are learning how to walk, saying their first words, and communicating using gestures. They should also be developing their hand-eye coordination and dexterity.

Some  Educational and fun activities for 1-year-olds

Hiding Games

Hiding games such as peek-a-boo or “Where’s Baby?” are educational and fun activities for 1-year-olds because babies learn about patterns, that the parent or caregiver will come back, and will teach your child about facial expressions.

Chasing Games
Running after your baby and having them run after you, too is education and fun for 1-year-olds because it allows them to exercise their leg muscles and learn how to crawl, walk, and run. The more they practice, the less they will fall. They will also learn how to be more coordinated.

Reading
At this age, it is very important to start reading to your child if you haven’t started already. You can make this more fun by acting out the characters you are reading and using different voices. Check our list of baby books for babies.

Colors and Shapes
Educational and fun activities for 1-year-olds need to include colors and shapes. This can be done quite easily; while you are eating dinner, talk about the shape and color of the different food items on your child’s plate. Everything you see, point to it and tell your child what color and shape it is. There are also many toys you can buy that will teach this.

Talk to Your Child
As far as teaching communication skills, the best way to do this is to just talk to your child. Talk about everything all day, even if you think your 1-year-old can’t understand you. Children of this age will attempt to mimic what you say, so it is important that you speak clearly and let your child look at how your mouth and tongue are forming the correct sounds.

Riding Toys
Educational and fun activities for 1-year-olds also include riding toys such as a car or horse. This teaches them to maintain their balance and develops their hand-eye coordination. Some parents even use their own backs as a riding toy.

Ball
Playing ball with your 1-year-old is educational and fun because it teaches them to grab, toss, roll, catch, and kick properly. This develops their hand-eye coordination and if they are standing up, it will also help them learn balance.

There are many educational and fun activities for 1-year-olds that will help them meet their milestones.

All of these are such great ideas and I try to do all of them with my little guy.  He loves being outside and being on riding toys the best but reading is a close second!

Thanks, Jeannette! My kids love the outdoors, too. But when we can’t go outdoors we make sure to have plenty of fun while we are inside!
